Worldwide Developers Conference - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The first WWDC was held in Monterey, California in 1983.
Through 2002, WWDC was held in mid-May. From 2003 to 2005 it was held in June to better distribute Apple's show commitments.
In 2006, WWDC was moved to August due to scheduling conflicts at the Moscone Center.

 WWDC 1998 Legislative Report - Project 064
On December 14, 1990, the WWDC received a letter from Colonel Donald E. Hazen, District Engineer for the USCOE, advising that it was his recommendation that the 404 permit be denied for the Sandstone Project as there is no specific use for 20,000 acre feet of the project yield.
In 1994, the WWDC began the process of obtaining federal permits to enable the construction of the smaller Sandstone project.
In August, 1995, the WWDC and Select Water Committee were briefed on the status of the EIS, toured the alternatives, and concluded that they would consider alternatives to the Sandstone Project if there was a clear consensus of support in the Little Snake Valley for that alternative.

I had been making a case to attend OSCON2006 this year, the logic being that it's a better fit for what I'm doing now than WWDC is. OSCON is a gathering of open source projects and programmers/developers, with tracks on various cool open source technologies, methodologies, etc...
WWDC is a corporate developers conference, aimed specificially at core Apple technologies (with some obvious trickle-over into open source as well).
The WWDC session on deploying WO apps on JBoss was pert' near useless.

WWDC used to be a relatively low-key gathering which didn't have much visibility outside of the immediate Mac developer community.

Historically, the WWDC keynote is not quite the mad frenzy that the Macworld SF keynote is. That is, you're as likely to see lines all the way from Oakland.

WWDC 2006: Unusually late, why? at The Apple Blog
Normally, WWDC will fall somewhere around late May to mid June (not always, but usually) but the date has become fluid over the years because Apple has used the opportunity provided to announce new products.
I am not sure why but I would guess that it is because they plan to complete the transition to intel at WWDC and it is going to take till then to get processors suitable for Powermacs and Xserves.
It could be as simple as they want WWDC later as they won’t have much to show in Paris… meaning that the desktops will be announced.

At WWDC you can visit the labs and work in an environment where smart people are hovering about, waiting to answer your questions.
Fraser’s suggestion for selling WWDC sessions on iTunes sounds good, though I’d hate to see this restricted to the US or UK like most video content is. I’d imagine Apple would also want to delay release to make WWDC more attractive, and at the same time limit sales to ADC members.

 TidBITS: The Decline of WWDC
WWDC is Apple's most important way of communicating directly with its developer base.
I'm not talking here about the value and relevance of the content, which is usually top-notch, though, to be sure, it can vary in quality, depending partly upon internal aspects of Apple's mental health and firmness of direction, and partly upon accidents of timing.
On a far milder scale, this year's WWDC was slightly less useful than last year's because the next release of the operating system is further off, so more of what Apple had to say about upcoming features was inchoate or guesswork.) No, I'm talking about more mundane considerations - freebies, food, and logistics.
