The dramatic wetlands at Welney, on the Ouse Washes, are home to some of the most spectacular winter gatherings of wild swans.
In the summer, Welney offers a relaxing opportunity to see rich varieties of rare waders and other wildlife.
In total, over 4,000 acres are managed by WWT, including seven Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI's), five Special Protection Areas (SPAs) and six Ramsar sites.

We arrived at Welney WWT at 1pm, after an unusual route provided by the GPS had taken us via several farm tracks, a farmyard, and a “Private — no through road”, before eventually routing us to Welney via an A road!
This was our first visit to Welney, and though the early afternoon was not an ideal time to birdwatch, we enjoyed excellent views of Pintail, large numbers of Whooper Swan (but no Bewicks), at least a hundred male Pochards (but only 3 females).

 Birds Korea - conserving birds and habitats in South Korea and the Yellow Sea eco-region
The Welney WWT Reserve is situated at the western end of the Washes, and attracts hundreds of Whooper and Bewick's Swans in the winter, accompanied by flocks of thousands of ducks.
Late afternoon is a special time as necks of swans flight-in to claim their night roosting sites: from late October 25th until the end of March, there is a daily grain feed by one of the wardens, with live commentary, at 3.30pm.
After meeting Darrell Stevens (WWT Welney Centre Manager), who gave the party an informative talk about the history of the Reserve over some very welcome tea and cakes (see below!), the group went to get stunning close-up views of feeding Bewick's Swans.
