WWV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WWV is the oldest continuously-operating radio station in the United States, first going on the air from Washington, D.C. in May of 1920, approximately six months before the launch of KDKA.
WWV moved to its present location at Fort Collins on December 1, 1966, enabling better reception of its signal throughout the continental United States.
WWV also "ticks" each second (except at 29 and 59 seconds past the minute, the omissions used to encode the standard interval of thirty seconds), to allow for accurate manual synchronization.

 WWV
WWV transmits the exact time-of-day in two ways at the same time -- through male voice announcements every minute followed by long beeps that serve as on-time markers for those announcements, and through a continuously-transmitted sub-audible digital time code.
WWV also transmits a 440 Hz tone every hour at two minutes past, with the exception of the first hour of the UTC day, when it transmits just the "ticks" and time code.
WWV was formerly located in Greenbelt, Maryland, on land which now is part of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

WWV broadcasts on 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20 MHz from Fort Collins, Colorado.
All broadcast frequencies used by WWV and WWVH are in the high frequency (HF) part of the radio spectrum that extends from 3 to 30 MHz.

WWVH - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
WWVH is the Pacific sister station to WWV, and has a similar broadcast format to WWV.
The time announcements on WWVH, which, like on WWV, are given in UTC, are made by a female voice (in this case, that of Jane Barbe), as opposed to the use of a male voice on WWV (using the voice of John Doyle).
WWVH, like WWV, transmits the standard audio frequencies of 500 and 600 Hz in alternating minutes, but when WWV is transmitting 500 Hz, WWVH transmits 600 Hz, and vice versa.

 NIST Radio Station WWV
WWV operates in the high frequency (HF) portion of the radio spectrum.
The WWV antennas are half-wave vertical antennas that radiate omnidirectional patterns.
The modulation level is 50 percent for the steady tones, 50 percent for the BCD time code, 100 percent for the second pulses and the minute and hour markers, and 75 percent for the voice announcements.

"The Tick"- Clear Channel's NEW WWV!
Word on the street is that the National Institue of Standards and Technology is close to signing a Lease Management Agreement with Clear Channel Communications, Inc. for its flagship Time and Frequency station WWV, Fort Collins, Colorado.
Additionally, WWV's traditional modulation level of 50 percent for the steady tones, 50 percent for the BCD time code and 75 percent for the voice announcements was deemed "not loud enough." The station will reformulate itself as "The Tick."
WWV's program director Hickory Zeitgeist says that the station has already added some snappy new announcements to the rotation, which can be heard by clicking the clock.

ARRLWeb: WWV Survey Planned by NIST
WWV Station Manager John Lowe says the announcements are being broadcast now as a heads up and to encourage early signups for the agency's survey mailing list.
Lowe added that he does not think WWV and WWV will be shut down, and he vowed to "fight for the radio stations," if it came down to that.
The WWV call letters were assigned to the National Bureau of Standards (as NIST was then known) in 1919, and the station initiated experimental broadcasts from Washington, DC, in 1920--several months before the historic KDKA broadcasts.

 Modeling WWV
Construction on this new railroad began in November of 2004, and most of the trackage is in an operations have begun, though structure-building and scenery is virtually non-existant.
This new layout is an attempt to duplicate scenes and operations on the WWV as faithfully as possible within space constraints.
It was modeling the WWV that got me into all this historical research, and eventually, the desire for a model railroad closer to duplicating the prototype led to a new version of the WWV, replacing what I call "WWV v1.2" (seen in Kalmbach's "Great Model Railroads 2004").
