The Spirit of Things - 3/3/2002: The New Believers - Part One, Frans de Waal
De Waal argues that it is time to recognise that humans are not the unique creators of culture and morality.
A famous example was a zoo gorilla, female, who rescued a human boy, a human boy had fallen into her enclosure, and was injured and conscious, and this gorilla female helped the boy and brought him to a place where people could take care of him.
Frans de Waal: Yes, I used that as an example to explain that not everything is harsh competition, and that the unfit perish, because Mozu certainly was an unfit individual in the sense she had no hands and feet, could barely walk.

About H. van de Waal   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Henri van de Waal was born in Rotterdam in 1910.
After the war, Van de Waal was appointed Director of the Printroom, and in 1946 he became professor of art history at the University of Leiden.
Definitely not a methodology or a theory of art, Van de Waal's beeldleer was more like a systematic inventory of everything that conditions a work of art, from the properties of paint to iconographic codes and from the history of frames to the history of taste.

An animal lover from the start, de Waal was surrounded by birds, fish, cats and a myriad of other pets as a child.
De Waal quickly discovered that bonobos — another species of ape that, like chimpanzees, shares 98.4 percent of its DNA with humans — were highly sexual animals, using sex as a means of affection, reconciliation and friendship.
Two of de Waal’s greatest contributions are bringing human and ape similarities to light and showing patterns of aggression and reconciliation, according to Benenson.

 Bonobo Society
In "Bonobo," de Waal draws upon his own research as well as that of many other primatologists to sketch a portrait of a species much less familiar to most people than are the other great apes -- the gorilla, the orangutan and the so-called common chimpanzee.
As de Waal puts it in his book, "The chimpanzee resolves sexual issues with power; the bonobo resolves power issues with sex." Or more coyly, chimpanzees are from Mars, bonobos are from Venus.

I think de Waal's chief contribution to understanding of the modern Caucasus is his observation that the Soviet institutions of ethnic federalism, in their own strange way, unintentionally stimulated nationalist politics.
De Waal urged a renewed push for negotiations, although he conceded that the current environment is not conducive to resolution.
This is very evident when de Waal characterizes the Turkish genocide of the Armenians as a unilateral Armenian claim (page 75, confirmed in note 5), thus denying it from having any role or basis for actions associated with national survival or self-determination of the Armenians.

In "Survival of the Kindest," Frans de Waal distinguishes between "functional altruism" and "intended kindness." In "Down with Dualism," he looks at the difference between "emotions" and "moral emotions." Using examples from your own experience, define these key terms.
"Down with Dualism" concludes with de Waal's assertion "that distress at the sight of another's pain is an impulse over which we exert no control." In "The Wreck of Time," Annie Dillard reflects on major events in the last millennium, including great tragedies that involved the deaths of untold numbers of innocent victims.
De Waal suggests that instead of encouraging ever more ruthless competition, the process of evolution also engenders forms of life that, surviving by means of cooperation, develop correspondingly altruistic emotions.

In his article "Some Principles of a General Iconographical Classification" (Van de Waal [1955]) Professor Van de Waal argued that it was impossible in the actual state of affairs in public collections, to obtain answers to iconographic questions.
Van de Waal discusses several projects (Hulton Picture Post Library in London, Warburg Institute in London and the Index of Christian Art at Princeton) and claims that, although he admired the projects to a high degree, their solutions were directed towards parts only of the problem he was addressing.
From the example given by Van de Waal (Van de Waal [1955]); see paragraph 2.2), we can infer that, from the viewpoint of iconographic research, description of images had to be systematic and detailed.

Chimpanzees, for instance, reconcile with a hug and a kiss, whereas rhesus monkeys groom the fur of former adversaries.
By objectively examining the dynamics of primate social interactions, de Waal makes a convincing case that confrontation should not be viewed as a barrier to sociality but rather as an unavoidable element upon which social relationships can be built and strengthened through reconciliation.
De Waal's demonstration of reconciliation in both monkeys and apes strongly supports his thesis that forgiveness and peacemaking are widespread among nonhuman primates--an aspect of primate societies that should stimulate much needed work on human conflict resolution.
