In 1608, many of the settlers followed Samuel Champlain north to found New France in modern day Quebec City.
The French took control of the Wabanahki First Nations territory and in 1654 king Louis XIV of France appointed aristocrat Nicholas Denys as Governor of Acadia granting him the confiscated lands and the right to all its minerals.
The area was captured by British colonists in the course of King William's War but returned to France at the peace settlement.

Wabanahki Confederacy – (wah-bah-NAH-kee) A political alliance established in the early 1700’s by Maliseet, Mi’kmaq, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, and Abenaki leaders.
Wampum belt – (WAUH-pum) In the Wabanahki tradition, shell beads were strung together and woven into belts, as a written document to record an important law, agreement, or event.

Joseph was skilled hunter and who also had traditional Wabanahki knowledge of local plants, animals and medicines.
  Although Passamaquoddy is not traditionally a written language, he sounded the Wabanahki  words by using the Roman alphabet and put them on his work.
  His art has communicated Wabanahki life and culture to the outside world through three centuries and will continue to be a source of inspiration in the future.
