Wabaunsee County is located abut midway between the north and south lines of the State, and about seventy-five miles west of the Missouri River.
The county is bounded on the north by the Kansas River, on the south by Lyon County, on the east by Shawnee County, and on the west by Morris County and a portion of Morris and Riley Counties.
The water courses by which the county is meandered are numerous, all of which are denominated creeks, and to each of which is given a particular name.

Wabaunsee County is in the Thirty-fifth Judicial District, in the Twenty-first Senatorial District, in the Forty-ninth Legislative District and the Fourth Congressional District.

The county along with Shawnee, Jackson, Jefferson, and Osage counties is included in the Topeka Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has an estimated population of 226,268 in the year 2003.
In the county the population was spread out with 26.70% under the age of 18, 6.20% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who were 65 years of age or older.

The first settlement of which there is any authenticated account, is that made in Wabaunsee Township in 1854, although there were a few settlers in other portions of the county whose advent dates as far back, but not possessing that contiguity as to give them that distinctive feature by which a settlement is characterized.
Hyatt to make himself a new home in Kansas, but instead of which he had found a grave, having been foully murdered by the Missourian, and this was the first case of murder committed by a white man on another in the county.
The county was scoured in every direction for several days, but the assassins succeeded in eluding the vigilance of their pursuers, and made their escape.

Under state law, Wabaunsee County, Kansas (County) is obliged to provide for the disposal of solid waste generated within its borders.
In 1981, and, after renegotiation, in 1985, the County contracted with respondent Umbehr for him to be the exclusive hauler of trash for cities in the county at a rate specified in the contract.
By its terms, the contract between Umbehr and the County was automatically renewed annually unless either party terminated it by giving notice at least 60 days before the end of the year or a renegotiation was instituted on 90 days' notice.

 Wabaunsee County History — Wabaunsee County Historical Museum
In 1855 the Kansas Territorial Legislature set the boundary for a portion of land west of Shawnee County and named it Richardson county after William P. Richardson, a strongly pro-slavery member of the Kansas Territorial Council in 1855.
The county was attached to Shawnee County for business and judicial purposes and had no officers of record until 1859.
Wabaunsee was the name of a famous Potawatomie Chief and meant "Dawn of Day" in the Indian language.

This is a very detailed map of the county including all the small roads, towns, etc. Using this we plotted a course that seemed to follow some small streams.
On our way to Kansas earlier in the week, we stopped to get gas at a small gas station in a small town.
So, take the good days and the bad days in stride and remember that when we are out, we are part of a big picture that many seldom get to see in the detail we do.

The colony was formed in New Haven, Connecticut, with the intent that members would migrate to Kansas Territory in the spring of 1856.
