 USW: IOC and Wabush Iron Ore Strikes Settled Successfully
I am pleased to report that 1,400 Steelworkers working at mines operated by the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) ended a 12-week strike late in September after ratifying an agreement that improved benefits, wages and pensions and avoided the major concessions being demanded by the employer at the time the strike began.
On October 12, the 600 members of USW Locals 6285 and 6254 employed at Wabush Mines in Pointe Noire in Quebec and Wabush in Labrador approved a new agreement that also provides for improved wages, benefits and pensions.
In order to reach an agreement, the company withdrew all of its demands for concessions, including those involving outsourcing, a "disposable employee" clause and an extended probation period.
