Wachovia (Pronunciation: wah-KO-vee-yah) was the area first settled by Moravians in what is now Forsyth County, North Carolina, including the present city of Winston-Salem.
The first settlement in Wachovia was at Bethabara, founded 17 November 1753 by fifteen Moravian brethren.
This land was named der Wachau, or Wachovia, in honor of the family estate of Count Zinzendorf, a prominent Moravian leader and bishop.

Curtis Arledge, the 39-year-old head of Wachovia’s fixed-income group who is overseeing the expansion, says he intends to grow revenues 10% this year to $2.3 billion—driven mainly by growth in the credit products area, particularly investment grade and leveraged finance—despite the anticipated decline in overall fixed-income activity as interest rates rise.
Wachovia is also selectively beefing up product offerings to include services in emerging markets, liability management, ratings advisory, corporate bond repackagings, and secondary trading for privately placed debt.
Wachovia has hired about 20 former Bank of America executives in the past 18 months, but Arledge denies anything less than amicable is going on.

ATLANTA, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- SunTrust Banks, Inc. (NYSE: STI) announced that the North Carolina Business Court ruled today that Wachovia Corporation (NYSE: WB) is required to deliver its shareholder list to SunTrust, allowing SunTrust to communicate directly with Wachovia shareholders.
SunTrust, its directors and executive officers and certain other persons may be deemed to be "participants" in SunTrust's solicitation of proxies from Wachovia stockholders.

Wachovia, which expects the purchase to close in the first quarter, said the combined business will be run by WFS President and Chief Executive Thomas Wolfe and will be based in Irvine.
