Duchy of Cieszyn (Polish Księstwo cieszyńskie) was an independent duchy in the area of Cieszyn Silesia.

In the meantime King of Bohemia Waclaw II decided to extend his rule and crowned himself as Polish king in 1302.
The next half century was full of wars between Łokietek (later his son Casimir III the Great) reuniting his country and a coalition of Bohemians, Brandenburgers and Teutonic Knights trying to divide Poland.
In October of 1938, Cieszyn Silesia (the disputed area west of the Olza river, also called Zaolzie - 906 km² with 258,000 inhabitants), was retaken by Poland from Czechoslovakia, in accord with the Munich Agreement.

However, he returned unnoticed to Cieszyn on the 3rd of March, and on the next day he decided to inspect his own palace in Cieszyn and its gardens, and see what other improvements he might wish for in another palace, which were not in Cieszyn.

On September 17, as the Polish armies were trying to regroup in the southeast, the Red Army marched into eastern Poland.
The Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister, Vladimir P. Potemkin, handed a note to the Polish ambassador in Moscow, Waclaw Grzybowski, claiming that Warsaw no longer existed as the capital of Poland, and that the Polish government had collapsed (neither was true).
But, as mentioned above, no one knew the contents of that protocol at the time, except for high German and Soviet officials and the U.S. government, which, however, did not publicize them.
