Wacom has announced the Intuos 3 as successor to the excellent Intuos 2 tablet.
The Intuos 3 will be available in 4x5, 6x8 and 9x12 sizes and features double resolution (5080 lines per inch), new software a new pen and mouse as well as 'express keys' and touch strips on the sides of the tablet.
The two-inch Touch Strips can be used to zoom, scroll, or perform a custom keystroke action such as changing brush size in Adobe® Photoshop®, all without having to move to the keyboard.

I was thinking of getting one of those when they were first announced for the US market a few weeks ago (the US version is around $390, though) but instead I decided to get a refurbished Intuos2 9x12" for $300.
But, with the 4x3 ratio wacom pad, it was impossible to take advantage of the the dual monitor set up for Photoshop.
I have been using two widescreen monitors, and while I have a 9X12 tablet, I have to throw away two thirds of the active area to map both monitors.

I use my Wacom tablet and my laptop in my weekly Life Drawing sessions just like I used to use a sketch book and pencil.
But I haven't broken out my wacom tablet for those works either because I use my mouse for whatever touch up I need in Photoshop.

 Illustration Friday! / Software and scanners and (Wacom) tablets--oh my!
What I have right now is Paint Shop Pro 8 (it's all that fit my budget a year ago--or now, for that matter), but my understanding of how layers and masks and just wrangling all of the things to paint with is foggy at best.
I used to draw with a mouse, but this is like drawing with a pencil, once you get used to the fact that you are not looking at your hand...
My wacom came bundled with Painter Classic, which was great and meant I could buy the upgrade version of Painter 8...not sure if you can upgrade from Classic to Painter IX though?
