McCree and his wife, Dores moved to her hometown of Detroit, Michigan.
As solicitor general, McCree personally argued 25 cases in the U.S. Supreme Court, including the Richard Nixon presidential tapes case and the Bakke "reverse discrimination" case.
President Jimmy Carter, who nominated McCree to the post, said at his memorial service that McCree was "a true American hero".

Wade Hampton McCree, Jr., was born on July 3, 1920, in Des Moines, Iowa, the second of four children.
McCree was also known as the "poet laureate of the Sixth Circuit,"a reference both to the command of language evidenced in his opinions, and to his impressive facility for writing impromptu limericks, which he used to break the tension during combative discussions.
McCree graduated from the famous Boston Latin School and attended Nashville’s Fisk University, his parents’ alma mater, from which he graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa in 1941.

In 1952, McCree was appointed by Michigan Governor G. Mennen Williams to the state's Workmen's Compensation Commission and in 1954 to a vacancy on the Wayne County Circuit Court.
In 1961 President Kennedy appointed Judge McCree to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, where he served until his appointment in 1966 to the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
As an appeals court judge, McCree took part in a number of school desegregation cases.

When inducted as participants in the Wade McCree Scholarship program, students and their parents sign an agreement stating that a conscientious effort will be made to achieve and maintain the standards of the scholarship program.
Upon high school completion, if the Wade McCree Scholarship participant has a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and obtained a minimum ACT score of 21, he/she will receive the Wade McCree Scholarship.
