Wager Swayne (November 10, 1834 – December 18, 1902) was the appointed military Governor of Alabama during the early days of Reconstruction, serving from 1867 to 1868.
In August 1861, Governor William Dennison appointed Swayne as Major of the 43rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which was being organized in Mount Vernon, Ohio.
Swayne led the 43rd OVI with distinction during the Atlanta Campaign.

By September 1867 the town of Swayne was surveyed, the future location of a permanent courthouse was chosen, and the construction of a temporary courthouse was authorized.

Colonel Fuller was placed in command of the "Ohio Brigade," which soon came to be classed with the most famous in the Western Army.
This Brigade was constituted of the Twenty Seventh; the Forty-Third, Colonel Wager Swayne; the Thirty-Ninth, Colonel E. Noyes; and the Sixty-Third Ohio, Colonel John W. Sprague.
At Iuka, this Brigade came to the fight only to see its close; but at the succeeding engagement at Corinth, it took so conspicuous and effective a part, that Colonel Fuller was specially commended by both General Stanly and General Rosecrans, and for such service was promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.

A reading room was established in Swayne Hall in 1881, and by the end of that decade other reading rooms were set up in Foster Hall, the women’s dormitory, and Stone Hall, the men’s dormitory (destroyed by fire in 1980.) A special theological library was maintained in a two story frame building named Graves Hall.
It faces old Swyane Hall where Thomas Tarrant and William Savery labored as slaves and which in 1867 they led the Freedmen’s Bureau, the American Missionary Association, along with General Wager Swayne, to purchase for the founding of a college trustee.
Completed in the one hundredth year of the Amistad Incident and as a tribute to the American Missionary Association for assisting the capitves in returning to Africa, the library bears two lasting evidence of the centennial.

 Wager Swayne
Assigned first to Memphis, Tennessee, and then Prospect, Tennessee, Swayne served with the Provost Marshal's office.  In late 1863, the Forty-Third Ohio received furlough back to Ohio.  Most of the men quickly reenlisted, including Swayne.
Upon completing his military service, Swayne established a law practice in Toledo, Ohio.  He moved to New York City in 1881, where he established a prominent law firm, representing primarily telegraph and railroad companies.  He died on December 18, 1902.
