Topic: Wagyl

In the News (Thu 24 Dec 09)

Wagyl - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Darling Scarp is said to represent the body of the Wagyl which meandered over the land creating the curves and contours of the hills and gullies, and the rivers, lakes like Lake Monger and springs.
As the Wagyl slithered over the land, his track shaped the sand dunes, his body scoured out the course of the rivers; where he occasionally stopped for a rest, and he created bays and lakes.
It has been suggested that the Wagyl stories represent the survival in oral tradition of the extinct megafauna of Australia, as there was a 5-6 metre long python (Scientifically called Wonambi naracoortensis), that was widely distributed in the southern states of the Australian mainland.

The Rainbow Serpent created the Nyoongah people to care for the land and the wildlife, and when its work was finished, it delegated the Wagyl (a mythical serpent) to be the keeper of the fresh water sources.
The Wagyl, a lesser, but nonetheless powerful, deity, protected the rivers, lakes and springs and the wildlife which abounded around, and in, these areas.
In essence, the Rainbow Serpent was the creator, the Wagyl was the keeper of the rivers, lakes and springs, and the Nyoongah people were the guardians of the land.

The last attempt 6-7 yrs ago, looked like succeeding and the exterior of the building was put right before once more the developers where forced to retreat, several million dollars out of pocket.

In some cases the significance is obvious because there are signs of Indigenous activity, such as rock art.
The Wagyl of the Swan River and its connection with the stories of Creation and the Wandjina rock paintings of the Kimberley, which control the region’s seasons, are two familiar examples of heritage sites.
The march of European progress in WA, such as mining, beachside resorts, roads and housing, have all had an impact on sensitive Indigenous sites.
