The typical Wah uses a ferrite core inductor to create a resonant peak in the frequency of the signal, which can then be swept up and down by rocking the pedal back and forth.
He got that “Wah wah wah” sound, and the earth was never the same again.
George Harrison had a song called "Wah Wah" that was a nice tribute to the pedal.

Wah-wah pedal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Wah-wah pedal is a type of guitar effects pedal that alters the tone of the signal to create a distinctive effect intended to mimic the human voice.
There are two types of wah pedals: one that lets the player control the effect via a foot pedal, and one that adjusts the effect automatically according to the amplitude of the signal from the guitar (auto-wah, or envelope-followed filter).
Guitarists of the pedal's early decades most commonly used the wah-wah on an already distorted sound, as the effect of wah-wah on a distorted sound is far more vivid than that of distortion on the output of a wah-wah.

Wah-wah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The wah-wah effect is a spectral glide, a "modification of the vowel quality of a tone" (Erickson 1975, p.72).
Although this effect is thought of almost exclusively as the electric guitar wah-wah pedal, it is also used in other contexts, listed here.
The effect was used in the '30s on "Sugar Blues" by commercial Dixieland trumpter Clyde McCoy, who built a long career around the sound, and even today has a popular wah pedal by VOX named after him.

 wah wah pedal@Everything2.com
A wah wah pedal is essentially a band pass filter with a resonant, variable center frequency.
Depressing the pedal toward the heel lowers the center frequency of the band pass filter, drops the resonant frequency, and makes the guitar sound more "thick", although most of the bass tone from the guitar is still cut out.
The wah wah pedal was popularized by Jimi Hendrix who, one assumes, became aware of it during his time gigging in the UK.

 The Technology of Wah Pedals
The original was the Vox style inductor based wah circuit, followed by others, most notably the twin-T circuit, the multiple feedback opamp active filter circuit, and most elaborate of all, the "state variable" style circuit used in the Mutron 3.
The first transistor is a block of gain to give you an active resonance, the wah pot and second transistor modulate the effective capacitance in a resonant circuit composed of the inductor and the variable capacitor.
If we were to put a second winding on a wah inductor, we could force DC through it from a current source circuit, which would force the "center" of the magnetic operation toward one or the other saturation points.

If you're going for more of a 60's sound wah then this one will do it for you as it has the "Fasel inductor" that was the key to the tone of the 60's wah.
There are a lot of wah pedals with a wider range out there but if you are looking for the traditional wah sound, this is the way to go.
Other wahs are cool because of additional features and for their own affect (yes that is the spelling I intended).

The Potentiometer, the most overlooked part of the circuit, is one of the keys to a good wah wah sound and there hasn't been a proper "tapered" pot, since the '60's "Icar" in any major manufacturer's wah.

 Foxrox Wah Retrofit
The Foxrox Wah Retrofit is a self-contained FET buffer/amp circuit that gets installed into your Wah Wah pedal, giving it the ability to cut through any Fuzz Face or Fuzz Face clone.
By essentially installing a "real" output section, the Wah Wah pedal becomes immune to the effects of loading, restoring range and depth to older, vintage Wah wah pedals without affecting their vintage value.
Newer, high-end "boutique" wah pedals, such as Teese RMC pedals also benefit from this mod because they are based on the same, classic inductor-based circuit.

There are some wah connissoirs who claim that a great wah simply must have a certain combination of components to sound great.
Oddly enough, these are usually found in the earliest examples of any effect from wah to fuzz and probably has less to do with the overall tone than some predisposition we might have to owning those original designs.

Analyzing the original "Fasel" inductor was the first measure taken to obtain the tonal sweep that made the original Vox wah the tool that it was.
By implementing a "hardwire bypass" modification, we have been able to eliminate the wah completely from the circuit so that you retain your amp's and guitar's true tonal characteristics.

 The Wahwactor: a voice-controlled wah-wah pedal
A wah-wah guitar pedal contains a resonant bandpass filter with a variable center frequency that is changed by moving the pedal back and forth with your foot.
We believe this is mainly due to the fact it takes much more time and practice to learn how to tap with your feet than to learn how to tap using your voice, not only physically but also because of psychomotor considerations.
Further work includes reducing the latency (which actually is approximately 10 ms for sound I/O using ASIO drivers and 24 ms due to the analysis hop size), taking care of background noise to make it more robust in a real live music performance environment, and applying different mappings at different pitches.

 NG BBS — building a wah-wah pedal
All you need parts wise is a two band EQ (bass and treb) and a mechanical transference to a pedal which causes the two dials to rotate at an inverse proportion to one another.
A wah pedal is just a way of adjusting your eq with your foot, modulating it from bass heavy to treb heavy.
Still, you're only going to get as good of a pedal as you put together, so make sure all the mechanical aspects have a nice solid chassis to ride on, and are built of sturdy materials that move smoothly.
