Topic: Wahabbism

In the News (Tue 2 Dec 08)

  Islamic fundamentalism is real Islam
Wahabbism, pure and simple means a strict adherence to Sunna, i.e Muhammad's way of life and a belief in the strict oneness of Allah, i.e Tawhid (When the pro-Islamic newspapers call Islamic mob as Tawhidi janata they might as well call them Wahabbi janata).
Wahabbism is a call simply to adhere to the strict tenets of Quran and Hadith.
Wahabbism, in the sense of a movement to enforce strict Sunna based society will not face a mass resistance, because the idea itself is judged politically correct (In the Islamic sense) to the majority.

There are sectarian differences, but even today the Saudi government maintains that Wahabbism is the pure quill Islam - and the mass condemnation from the rest of Islam is notably absent.
Wahabbism, and any other similar Islamic sect, needs to face a choice: Either change the beliefs of your sect to root out the savage, murderous practices you now call doctrine, or face destruction from the civilized world.
Defining our struggle as one against Wahabbism is fine as far as it goes, but it leaves out the Iranian mullahs.

Wahabbism is named after Mohammad bin-Abdul Wahab, an 18th-century religious thinker who fought the influence of Sufism in Sunni Islam, which he viewed as a deviation from the original Islamic rules.
Although "Wahabbism" refers to the mainstream religious doctrine of Saudi Arabia, the word is indiscriminately used in Russia -- often in a derogatory way -- to designate various non-traditional Islamic movements, regardless of their origins.
Talking to reporters later today, the Georgian leader renewed his attacks against "Wahabbism" and said his calls for action against radical Islam should not be interpreted as approving the harassment of religious minorities.

Wahabbism is an extremely strict form of Islam, not dissimilar to the brand pushed by the Taliban.
After being ejected from Egypt, the Brotherhood and thousands of Wahabbi adherents fled to Saudi Arabia, where they were offered asylum.
Wahabbism was already the Saudi state religion, but the Brotherhood is credited with politicizing the sect.

MSA members are fueled by a religious extremism parallel to that of their medieval spiritual counterparts: Saudi Wahabbism.
Just like Saudi Wahabbism, the MSA shows no tolerance or understanding of those who dare to openly dissent from its ranks as I had done.
Yet while the MSA is busily playing out their role as bridgeheads for bin Laden-like zealotry, at least this Muslim Arab has the backbone to stand up for the freedom of the poor Iraqi people.

It is also the basis of the "teaching" going on at thousands of madrasas (Islamic schools) in Pakistan and elsewhere, the same schools that produced the Taliban.

Saudi Wahabbism interprets the Koran literally, discriminates against women, fulminates against Jews, and incites jihad against the wider non-Muslim world.
Indeed, the Saudis face tremendous pressure to break their unholy alliance with Wahabbi extremists, who for years have conferred legitimacy on an otherwise corrupt kingdom in exchange for the freedom to foment intolerance at home and abroad.

Our organization recognizes the massive moral shortcomings of this immoral culture and attempts to fix it by enforcing the purest form of Islam; this form of Islam, Wahabbism, is the law of the Holy Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and we will impose it on America and all its inhabitants.
We are trying to educate the population of our aims so that they can submit themselves on their own accord without forcing us to resort to violence.
In Wahabbism, the only true interpretation of Islam, it is forbidden to make an image of anything that has a soul and is living, for God has forbidden this.

After all, we have been repeatedly told that Wahabbism is a distinctly Sunni philosophy; it must therefore stand to reason that these Sunnis in this triangle are the violent Wahabbi mindset Muslims, bent on death, murder, and an evil that we cannot even begin to imagine.
Another impact that the Bush Administration is seeking is the presentation of a new “evil-doer” label for the American people, who now seem to thrive on the simplicity of such labels.
In effect, the American public is left with Wahabbism, which is a completely misunderstood and brutally vilified philosophy, and the link between it and the regime of Saddam Hussein.

Nonetheless, he believes that moderate Muslims and moderate Islam has existed throughout Muslim history, and that the only barrier to true moderation is the cancer of Wahabbism.
Furthermore, a mere return, to pre-Wahabbi Islamic thought, even if that construct could be construed as moderate, without addressing the rationale behind the ideological shift from it to Wahabbism does nothing to adequately protect Islam from a future Wahabbi hijacking.
What is required, is not a return to the so-called "glory days" of Islam, where a limited form of pluralism and discourse existed, but the removal of the man made doctrines that allowed Islam to succumb to Wahabbism.

A legal system based on traditional Nigerian Islam probably wouldn't be optimal, but it has little to do with what they got.
I think HRW's point about "political Sharia" refers to the fact that sharia in northern Nigeria is as much about regionalism and ethnic conflict as about theocratic Islam.
