The Waikato, the Tongariro, the Clutha, the Waiau, and the Waitaki were all under large hydro lakes or the Ministry of Works were in the process of finishing the job off, or 'Taming the Wild Rivers' as their history was called.
Rivers like the Wanganui and the Mohaka and the Waikato are an inseparable part of the identity of the tangata whenua.

 waiau river
The Waiau River runs mainly is a north-south direction, some 112 km in length flowing from Lake Te Anau through Lake Manapuori and thence through open country, some bush-clad gorges and pastoral country to the sea.
Because of the much lower water flow now, it is natural to expect a decline in trout populations, but the river still has adequate stocks of both brown and rainbow trout which rise freely, especially during the evenings.
It is important to note that since the transformation of the Waiau, the trout now tend to feed in certain pockets of a pool or ripple.

The river was more exciting that I remembered with the section before the Hawarden Gap winding back and forth with plenty of grade two rapids and bluffs to negotiate, one of which resulted in a swim after tipping over and failing to roll.
After that the river open out a bit and there were fewer and easier rapids, so we could sit back a bit and enjoy the scenery which was great and well worth the trip.
The river was quite different from the other times I had paddled it, with much more pressure waves and less boulders to dodge, the hole where I banged my head on a previous trip was just a series of waves.

The Waiau Branch was a typical rural NZ Railways branch line, leaving the South Island Main Trunk railway at Waipara, a small settlement 63 km north of Christchurch, and running 66 km through mainly flat country to Waiau on the south bank of the Waiau River.
It was originally envisaged when the line was built that it would be the main railway line north to Picton, and indeed the current main line through Parnassus was terminated at that station in 1912 and the current route north not progressed until the 1930s.
The original road bridge at Waiau was constructed to be a road/rail bridge if required (in NZ's classic single deck style) but the rails never actually crossed the river.
