Waikanae (pronounced Why-Can-I) is a small town on New Zealand's Kapiti Coast.
The waters between Waikanae Beach and Kapiti Island are a marine reserve, and whales are sometimes spotted on their migration routes through the narrow corridor.
Another settlement called Waikanae Beach exists near Gisborne on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand.

She was in the Te Whanganui-a-Tara area when the land was sold to the New Zealand Company in 1840s but at Waikanae to hear the guns at the battle of Kuititanga.
At Waikanae, Pirihira had lived with just three families of Kaitangata on the south side of the Waikanae river which included the family of Tuhata and the Uenuku family.
A large number of people also left Waikanae after the Battle of Haowhenua to settle on Arapawa Island and were visited regularly by their chief Tuhata and in later generations by his son Inia Tuhata d 1871 a Maori preacher who had married Mere Pomare in 1857.

Cr Chris Laidlaw, chairman of Greater Wellington s Landcare Committee, says it is the first of two parts of a major 10 year plan to improve flood protection measures in the area.
The stopbank is designed to prevent overflows from the Waikanae River in major flood events and protects the Nimo Ave and Te Moana Rd areas of Waikanae.
Engineers estimate that the river realignment will reduce the probability of a failure of the stopbank in a really large flood, such as a 100 year period return event, from 80% to 20%.
