  Waikanae River
Dc resistivity traversing with a Wenner array with minimum electrode spacing of 5 m is being used to investigate the interaction of the Waikanae River with groundwater.10 transects of the river have been measured imaging the shallow electrical structure associated with the river/groundwater interaction.
There is a clear indication that further to the east the river level sits several metres above the groundwater surface, whereas in the lower reaches of the river the groundwater level is very close to the surface.
River gauging indicates that this change corresponds to a change from a regime where there is significant loss of water from the river to the groundwater system to one where there appears to be little interaction.

The grass verges and lawns of the subdivisions that are sprouting all round the edges of Waikanae, Paraparaumu and Raumati have turned crispy brown.
On November 24, as the river level sank ominously, the borefield was commissioned and some of its water was pumped up the hill above Waikanae and mixed with the dwindling river water at the council's treatment station.
But the river has also kept falling, down to a flow of 900 litres a second this week, way below normal and not far above the 750 litres a second when no more water is allowed to be taken.

Whilst the Hutt River fishery is showing signs of rejuvenation, the outlook on the Waikanae River is rather less positive.
Although the recent fluctuations in trout numbers on both the Hutt and the Waikanae Rivers are symptomatic of rivers that are prone to flooding, feed back from anglers suggests that the Wainuiomata should get the prize for consistency over recent seasons.
This is response to a dramatic and consistent decline in the number of medium to large trout observed in drift dive counts from a high of 50km in 1988/89 to 14km in 1999/2000.

At the next river he thought he could hear his errant wife and he called it Waikanae (wai - water, kanae - to stare wildly).

Challenges and satisfactions in the role of mayor of Kapiti District
We have reached the conclusion that for the area from Raumati to Waikanae a combination of taking water from the Waikanae River, taking water from a bore field, and storing water in a pond system near the Waikane River was the most appropriate water supply solution for the area.
As we progressed through this process it became clear that when sufficient water was not available from the Waikanae River it would be possible to supplement this fully with water from the bore field.
This will not take the through traffic but will be of vital importance to local people enabling them to access their own communities and adjoining communities in a manner that will be safer and more reliable and provide an option in the event of major disruption on the state highway.
