 Waikato DHB Health Warning issued for Waikato River
Waikato Medical Officer of Health Dr Dell Hood is warning people to avoid recreational contact with the Waikato River, from Lake Karapiro to the sea, after routine testing found elevated levels of potentially toxic blue-green algae in the water.
Dr Hood said algae were always present in the river at low levels and most of the time they were harmless.
There was potentially a higher risk of skin rashes because this type of algae typically formed long strands that could become trapped in clothing, she said.

Dr Hood said some areas of the Waikato River downstream of the lake still had cell counts above the warning level.
Anyone experiencing health effects after using the any part of the Waikato River or its hydro lakes for contact recreation should notify the Public Health Unit, even if they are unsure if the river water caused the problem.

On Saturday 2nd September the Waikato River will play host to the titanic clash between Waikato University and Cambridge University, so organisers of The Gallagher Great Race are urging people to be on the banks of the Waikato River earlier than ever this year.
Prior to the main race the banks of the river are filled with children's entertainment, food and drink stalls, corporate hosting, street theatre, displays, competitions and markets.
A 40 square metre screen allows those at the finish line to watch the race live and speakers lining the banks of the river (both at the start and finish) allow spectators to listen to the live commentary to ensure that no one misses out no matter where they are watching the race from.
