Waikouaiti is situated on flat land near the northern end of a small bay and about 2½ miles north of the mouth of the Waikouaiti River.
Watkin from the outset took a firm stand against the vices of the whaling community and the savage customs of the Maoris, and was in a measure responsible for the subsequent orderly progress of the settlement.
Waikouaiti is said to mean “the water that decreased”, or “receding water”, perhaps referring to a change in the river's course in olden times.

He had an eeling camp near the mouth of the Waihao River, to the north.
The lower Waitaki settlements of Te Puna-a-Maru, Tauhinu, Tama-haere-whenua and Te Aka-taramea were occupied on a seasonal basis, and Te Huruhuru seems to have had his closest connections in the village at Waikouaiti.

A macrobenthic survey was conducted in the Waikouaiti Estuary, southeastern, New Zealand, during winter (1998) and summer (1999) in order to describe community patterns along the estuarine gradient and their temporal patterns, relate the observed community patterns to environmental parameters and to assess the degree of taxonomic resolution necessary to distinguish these patterns.
Three replicate cores (10 cm in diameter and 10 cm deep) were taken from 26 sites along the estuarine gradient.
