The Waimakariri is one of the larger braided rivers in New Zealand.
The Selwyn District Council scheme intake is at the Waimakariri Gorge.
It emerges from the gorge at Woodstock and flows to the sea in a wide, braided riverbed, with constricting narrow reaches at the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge and downstream from the motorway bridge.

Early settlers in the Waimakariri basin were quick to to take advantage of the numerous deposits of coal which were a feature of the district.
This is an upper tributary of the Waimakariri River, which it flows into near the Siberia Curve on the railway and a little north of the Highway Bridge.
Its source is the Goldney Glacier on the slopes of Mount Rolleston (2,275 metres high) and flows south down the Bealey Gorge, renowned for its scenery, particularly the Devil's Punchbowl and the Bridal Veil Falls.

The main challenge for the day was the 67km paddle down the Waimakariri River to the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge, near Sheffield at the edge of the Canterbury Plains.
The upper and lower sections of the river were through flat shingle beds, the river winding from one side to the other and dropping periodically through chutes across shingle banks down to the next level.
In between was the Gorge, where there were rapids, boulders and bluffs to navigate through and around.

 Swannanoa Railway History
For some time the safety of Kaiapoi Island had been a concern (The Waimakariri river split near Clarkeville and one branch flowed Northwards behind Kaiapoi settlement to join the Cam river about where the Motorway now crosses), with it being completely covered in water during norwest floods of the Waimakariri.
The railway crossed the Waimakariri in 1872 and was opened to Kaiapoi on 29 April and Rangiora on 6 November 1872.
The bridge over the Waimakariri Gorge is still in use today for road vehicles, although the railway line was closed and removed in 1932, as was the Horrelville - Bennetts extension of the West Eyreton branch.

After gaining permission from the landowner we started in a big glide below some cliffs, several large trout slurping off the surface.
Took a while to even get a follow, the river in good condition and running clear.

The Mount Torlesse Coal Company was established in 1918 to mine coal in the Torlesse Range just south of the Broken River near its confluence with the Waimakariri River.
The Midland railway line between Otarama and Avoca in the Waimakariri Gorge incorporates many notable engineering features such as viaducts and tunnels.
