  Window manager
A window manager is a program that controls the placement and appearance of application windows under the X Window System.
The Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh platforms have historically provide a fixed set of ways to control how the windows are displayed on the screen, and how the user may interact with them.
Window managers differ from one another in several ways, including appearance (including menus, docks, pagers, etc.), memory consumption, customizability, multiple and virtual desktop (desktop larger than the physical monitor size) support and whether they are closely inegrated with a Desktop Environment.

Anarchy is a window manager for the X Window System and is implemented in less than 500 lines of CLOS oriented Scheme code.Despite its small code size, it supports most functions expected of a basic window manager (move, resize, hide, minimize, maximize, list windows, root menu).
It has a click-to-focus but not raise-on-focus policy, a window resizing mechanism that allows one or many edges of a window to be changed in one action, and an innovative menubar that shares the same part of the screen as the taskbar.
Window titlebars are prevented from going off the edge of the screen by constraining the mouse pointer, and when appropriate the pointer is also constrained to the taskbar/menubar in order to make target menu items easier to hit.

Figure 11 illustrates that this separation of the ``observing control computer'' and the ``LRIS control computers'' already exists, and was in fact used to our advantage in the ACTS project as well, to create a separate remote observing control computer connected to the ATM network.
The other advantage to this approach is that it enables the large image data files to be transferred to the remote host while the instrument CCD is reading the data from the hardware itself.

Blackbox is a window manager that works on X Window System platforms.
However, its small size comes at some cost, as certain functions that are ordinarily standard equipment in other window managers must be provided by additional software.
For example, you cannot define any hotkeys in a bare bones Blackbox setup, and the management of menus and themes must be performed from the command line with a text editor.
