Christmas Past in Waimea - Waimea Gazette
Rural and isolated, Waimea did not respond immediately to the new customs of Christmas, although travelers to Hilo at the turn of the century must have noticed the bakeries and stores filled with candies and presents for the holidays.
Richard Smart, who had returned to Waimea after the war years, was especially fond of this celebration and always became involved in the preparations.
Waimea was evolving -- population growth, new businesses and a new community association meant that the Ranch could focus its holiday efforts on its own employees.
