There are beautiful views along the Waioeka river from the bridge.
The bridge was built to provide access across the Waioeka River for farming communities in the valley.
When the river is in flood only the south route is recommended as the river crossing at the start of the loop becomes impossible.

The Waioeka-Otara Rivers Scheme includes substantial stopbanking of both the town and rural sections of both rivers, one pump station (Duke Street) and considerable bank edge protection works including riprap, rubble and plantings.

The 59-year-old walked away with minor injuries after his car was thrown about 20 metres into the Waioeka River on the Gisborne side of Wairata on Wednesday afternoon.

After Wairata the Waioeka Scenic Highway follows the right bank of the Waioeka River virtually all the way to Opotiki through some fine stands of native forest.
The name Waioeka seems to be a corrupted form of Waioweka (water of the weka) and although weka disappeared from here in the 1920s, a few have recently returned to the upper reaches of the river, presumably from Poverty Bay.
Lamprey, koara, banded kokopu, both species of eel and inanga are among the native fish of the Waioeka, together with the introduced brown and rainbow trout.

Other common species of duck live on this river also, but are usually seen in groups.
This was the only duck we saw in the weekend of River Rd - Central Whirinaki - Upper Whirinaki - Mangamate - River Rd circut.

The Tauranga Bridge is a harp suspension bridge with a 57.8 metre centre span built in 1922.
It carries a single lane of road across the Waioeka River in a scenic ‘bush and gorge’ setting.
Sections were forfeited by the lessees in 1927 and 1938 and by the early 1970’s the Crown owned all blocks which now form the Waioeka Gorge Scenic Reserve.

Unfortunately, as we cannot control mother nature, we have had to make contingency plans in the event of the Waioeka River being in flood or, more likely, being too low on the day of the race.
