Mahanga was a descendant of the occupants of the Tainui canoe which landed at Kawhia.
There were no roads and soldiers had to rely on river transport and pack horses to carry agricultural implements and stores.
It was bounded by the Waipa river which was not bridged at Whatawhata until the 4th April 1881 and at Te Rore on the 12th July 1881.

The Waipa River is the major tributary of the Waikato River, the junction being at Ngaruawahia.
Before the arrival of white settlers and during the early period of their occupation, the Waipa River (possibly meaning “the river of fortified villages”) was an important access route to the western margin of “The Waikato”, to the Raglan County, and to the “King Country” which lies to the south of the Puniu River.
Now the Waipa is no longer used for transportation and the neighbouring farm land is almost wholly used for the dairy industries.

A Hanalei ecologist is claiming that sections of the Hanalei River, the shoreline areas of Hanalei Bay where county restrooms are located, and three streams leading to the bay all contain high counts of a disease-carrying bacteria, posing a potential public health risk.
They found Hanalei River had a mean value of 324 bacterial count for every 100 milliliters of seawater, water at Hanalei pier had a 42.5 count, water at the Hanalei pavilion had a 15.
Berg also said the Hanalei River has been listed by state officials as an unimpaired waterway, and that the hui hopes the same can be done for the three streams, as a way to help find solutions to bring down the bacteria levels to acceptable levels.

Extremely high river levels were experienced on the Waikato and Waipa Rivers between 9-20 July due to widespread, and in places record rainfall.
The flood alert levels in the Taupo, Waipa, and Waikato River systems were quickly raised from 3 to 5 from the evening of 9 July when it became obvious that extremely high river flows were being generated in the upper catchments, and heavy rain was continuing to fall.
The peak flow in the Awakino River Taupo (estimated to have a probability of occurrence in any one year of 20% (5 year flow) inundated SH 3, and the road was closed due to flooding and slips.

Work was created as the Waipa River was diverted onto its present course so 5km of stop banks could be built to protect the town (previously the river ran next to Phillips Ave and down through what is now Lake Huiputea).

Since the sides of the valley are steep, the bush cover has an important flood control function in reducing and filtering the water flows into the Waimahora which is a major tributary of the Waipa River.

An Otorohanga man is angry access to the Waipa River and areas adjacent to the Otorohanga stopbanks has been restricted.
Terry Price says he has enjoyed 25 years of unimpeded access to the Waipa River for recreational purposes, and is outraged this may not be possible in the future.
He said the money council received from the grazing was used to offset the costs of maintaining the stopbanks and the river channel.
