The general eastward tilting of the Waipara region resulted in deposition of coarser sediments in the west and finer sand and siltstone sediments in the east, including the entire WVW region.
The folding imparted a dominant N-E trend throughout the region and in Waipara the main structural units to this day are N-E striking anticlines and synclines with axes generally plunging S-E with moderate dips in the S-E limbs of anticlines, and steep dips, in many places accompanied by overturning and faulting, in the N-W limbs.
Waipara soils are predominantly younger sediments and ice age sands and gravels.

Details of the earliest pastoral history of the district are sketchy, but it is known that around 1860 most of the countryside surrounding Hawarden had been consolidated into one vast holding called Horsley Downs.
It lay west of the present Waikari-Hurunui road, extending from the south branch of the Waipara River, right up to the Hurunui River and west to the Seaward River.
A measure of the scale of this enterprise is the fact that only our six and eight day treks leave the former boundaries of the station.

Waipara Valley’s highest-profile winery, Pegasus Bay, will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2005.
Founder Ivan Donaldson (who is Matthew’s father) attributes this success to the vineyard’s location, which he believes is the hottest site in the valley.
Ivan suggests, somewhat provocatively, that Bordeaux grapes ripen better in the Waipara Valley than the Auckland region, which has warmer overall temperatures, but not the same extremes of heat.

The fate of Camp David, the former Waipara headquarters of the Full Gospel Mission religious sect, will be put in the hands of the High Court.
The trust's biggest asset is a 48ha Waipara property bounded by State Highway 1 and Darnley Road on the south bank of the Waipara River that includes the fortress-like headquarters of the sect known as Camp David.
The property is now in the burgeoning Waipara wine- making area and would be worth many thousands of dollars more than Douglas Metcalf, the cult's founder, paid for it in the mid-1970s.
