Waipawa is situated on the northern bank of the Waipawa River, a tributary of the Tukituki River, and on the south-eastern fringe of the Takapau (Ruataniwha) Plain.
In December 1850 Sir Donald McLean was instructed by Governor Sir George Grey to negotiate for the purchase of Hawke's Bay Maori lands.
Waipawa was made a town district in 1884 and in 1908 was constituted a borough.

Approximately 1 hour from the Sunrise carpark, the track drops steeply down to the Waipawa River and the Waipawa Hut is located 200m downstream on the southern side of the river.
Sunrise carpark can be reached by walking an unmarked route down the Waipawa riverbed to farmland where a track climbs the true left bank and continues on for 2 kilometres to the carpark.
Slightly upstream and on the southern side there is a signpost marking the start of the track, which follows the forest edge to the park boundary.

Although in the early days of settlement the river was used by barges to transport goods as far as Waipawa, increased erosion in the headwaters has now made it very shallow right to the mouth.
They fought for possession of a boy who fell accidentally into the lake and their struggles formed the Waipawa and Tukituki Rivers which drained the lake.
Tukituki means “to demolish” and it is thought that this refers to the destruction of the lake mentioned in the story.
