The Wairau's main tributaries are the Branch, the Waihopai and Rainbow rivers.
The Wairau rises in the Spencer mountains and runs from the south to the north before turning to follow a part of the alpine fault line filled by glacial outwash.
The Wairau today, is a major source of water for the many crops grown on the plains and is famous for its fishing, particularly in the lower reaches, but it has also been responsible for threatening the very existence of many people in some of its floods which have reached over 55000cumecs.

The Wairau at Tuamarina recorder is indicative of flood conditions for the main Wairau floodplain.
These occur when minor river breakout occurs, perhaps from smaller rivers such as the Pukaka or Waitohi, or from Gibsons Creek, or minor overflows from the bigger rivers of Wairau, Opawa, or Taylor.

Anyway, its always a bit of a mission the Wairau, you have to collect the gate key and fork out $20 per carload these days and it's the kind of trip where the ubiquitous 'shuttle bunny' really comes into her own.
My friend Sharon was keen on this idea when I floated it some weeks back, not familiar with the concept in its true guise, she had already rustled through her collection of fancy dress and found the rabbit ears she had been looking for just for the occasion.
The weather was not the best with cloud covering most of the mountains but thankfully not the one covered completely with snow that exposed itself at the put-in along with a scattering of snow on the ground.

This time they were again racing against the clock for the final river dark zone block, if they passed the Picton bridge, 40 kms away, before 9pm then they could finish otherwise they would be stuck on the river until 6am the following morning.
