 Waite Phillips
Waite Phillips is, without a doubt, the most important man to the history of Philmont Scout Ranch.
The Villa Philmonte is Spanish for "House of the Phillips in the mountains".
Waite had allowed Scouts to use his land since he purchased the first tract in 1922 and he had felt that they too would enjoy the land as much as he and his family enjoyed the area.

Phillips gifts were, he said, "to inspire and train boys in the virtues of faith, initiative, self-reliance, resourcefulness, and courage".

Waite Phillips got rich in the oil business early in the last century, bought over 130,000 acres of mountain land in northern New Mexico, near the Old West town of Cimarron, and over the years donated all of his land to the boy scouts.
The donation from Waite Phillips requires that the ranch continue in use as a cattle and buffalo ranch or the land reverts to the company founded by his two brothers, the giant oil company Phillips 66.
Phillips 66 pays more than passing attention to the affairs of Philmont scout (and cattle) ranch and I was told that Philmont keeps very detailed records of the ranching operation in case the Phillips auditors come snooping around.
