Provinces as part of the address system, meanwhile, were not abolished but, on the contrary, augumented.
These province names are considered to be mainly of historical interest; however, there is no record that these names were ever officially abolished.

During the Sengoku period, Satsuma was a fief of the Shimazu daimyo, who ruled much of southern Kyushu from their castle at Kagoshima city.
In 1871, with the abolition of feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures after the Meiji Restoration, the provinces of Satsuma and Osumi were combined to eventually establish Kagoshima prefecture.
Satsuma was one of the main provinces that rose in opposition to the Tokugawa shogunate in the mid 19th century.

Tosa (土佐国; -no kuni) was an old province of Japan in the area that is today Kochi prefecture on Shikoku.
Tosa was ruled by the during the Sengoku period, and briefly unified Shikoku under his rule, although he was reduced to Tosa again by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and dispossessed entirely after Sekigahara.
Tosa was a relatively poor province, and lacked a strong castle town even under the Chosokabe.

Towards the end of the Kamakura period, inheritance began to be split among a lord's sons, making each heir's holdings, and thus their power, smaller.
Over time, many of these smaller fiefs came to be dominated by the Shugo, Constables who were administrators appointed by the shogunate to oversee the provinces.
The uprisings that resulted, particularly when the Shugo tried to seize control of entire provinces, were also called ikki; some of the largest and most famous took place in Wakasa province in the 1350s.

On the battle of Nagakute, at the age of thirteen, Nagashige led troop of in the place of his father.
But on 1585 after Nagahide died, Hashiba Hideyoshi reduced his domain to barely 40,000 koku at Matsuto, Kaga Province from over a million and took away Echizen Province and Wakasa Province.
This is believed to have been Hideyoshi's effort to reduce Niwa clan's strength.
