Wake County is the second most heavily populated county in North Carolina and is one of the most politically volatile counties in the state.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 10.70% from 18 to 24, 36.50% from 25 to 44, 20.40% from 45 to 64, and 7.40% who are 65 years of age or older.

It is in the northeastern section of the State and is bounded by Warren, Franklin, and Granville counties and the state of Virginia The present land area is 253.52 square miles and the 2000 population was 42,954.
Wake was formed in 1771 from Johnston, Cumberland and Orange.
The act establishing the county specified that the first court was to be held at the courthouse of Bute; it also provided that subsequent courts were to be held at a place decided upon by the justices of the peace until a courthouse could be erected.

The Wake County Board of Commissioners today voted to join an area compact along with other local governments to focus on ways to make the air cleaner and meet the federal government's ozone standards for the future.
By entering into the compact, the County is joining with other local governments in hopes of gaining more time to take actions that help the area meet EPA's ozone standards, and therefore retain future transportation funding opportunities.
Several cities and counties around the state have already adopted resolutions to join the Early Action Compact; nearby, those include the counties of Durham, Person, Granville and Franklin, and the towns of Zebulon and Clayton.
