It is situated on picturesque Sunday Lake, which is bordered on the north by a park and on the south by the high school.

Wakefield is the easternmost mining town of the Gogebic Range and the closest town to the west side of the Porcupine Mountains State Park.
Wakefield was platted at the same time as other Gogebic towns, in 1884, and named after an official in the Brotherton Mine, one of four pioneering mines.
Wakefield has been hit doubly hard recently with the closing of both the White Pine Mine and Connors, the biggest local private employer, which logged hard maples and ran a sawmill here.

From Wakefield to what we call Tula tracks was awesome just groomed flat and fast from Tula tracks to Lake Gogebic a little bumpy and need to use caution on a few spots where they are trying to fill in some wet areas.
We ran in to the groomer in Bessemer which was heading to Wakefield.
