Wakeshma Township is a township located in Kalamazoo County, Michigan.
As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,414.
In the township the population is spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who are 65 years of age or older.

Although travel to and from the township was difficult during the early years, a stagecoach line ran from Three Rivers north to Howardsville and Flowerfield through Section 2, near the present day Pulver Road.
According to Cutler’s history, “The first school house in the township was built of logs, in 1833, and stood at the edge of the woods on the south line of section 35.” As late as the 1950’s seven one-room schools under county supervision provided elementary education in the township.
The Plan was submitted to the Township Board in July 1991, revised in December 1991, and adopted by the Township Board in May 1993.

Wakeshma Township was organized in 1846, the last township in Kalamazoo County to be settled and developed.
History of Kalamazoo County, Michigan, published in 1880, reported: "The hamlet, which in the business season has quite an important trade, has two churches, a flourishing school, taught by Miss Minnie Pierce; two general stores, the proprietors of which are G. Byington and Messers.
Schoolhouses followed the arrival of settlers, until in 1880 the township was well-supplied with means of instruction with six whole and four fractional school districts.

Individuals or businesses found violating the state’s EAB quarantine (21 counties in Southeast Michigan and 31 outlying infestations) are subject to fines ranging from $1,000 to $250,000 and jail time of up to five years for moving regulated ash materials, including firewood.
EAB is an exotic, aggressive beetle putting state’s 700 million ash trees at risk of extinction and has already been responsible for the death of approximately 15 million of Michigan’s ash trees.

Some American soldiers captured in Michigan during the war were held captive by the Potawatomi at a village later known as Indian Fields where the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport is now located.
The Treaty of Chicago of 1821 required the Potawatomi to cede most of their land to the United States and to live on a series of reservations, including Match-e-be-natch-e-wish that included much of what is now today’s central city of Kalamazoo.
Finally, by the 1833 Treaty of Chicago, the Potawatomi were forced to accept that they would cede their remaining land in Michigan and agree to settle west of the Mississippi River within 35 years.

Frank Lloyd Wright was designing and building several of his “Usonian” homes in and around the area.  It was in the midst of this post-war peacetime that George and Maxine (Pence) Bartholomew welcomed the birth of their son, Louis, on June 2nd.
They traveled together to fairs in Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.  While in high school, Louie was a tackle on the high school football team and was one of their star players.  When he was a junior, Louie met the love of his life — his future bride — Carol Norton.

Allus Township--The Northeast Michigan Council of Governments has approved the siting of a landfill in Allus Township, stating that it is consistent with the Presque Isle County's Solid Waste Management Plan.
County residents are opposed to the landfill, based on a fear that underground limestone formations will promote groundwater contamination.
Kalamazoo County--A Kalamazoo County Solid Waste Management Planning Committee approved a trash management plan for the county, including a provision providing for the construction of a landfill in Wakeshma Township, and have passed on the plan to the county Board of Commissioners for final approval.
