	Protected Areas
		Two areas in Afghanistan are critical to biodiversity preservation: the Wakhan Corridor has some of the last relatively pristine wildlife habitats and wildlife populations left in Afghanistan, while the Hazarajat Plateau has some of the most important existing and potential protected areas in Afghanistan.
		WCS Director of Science Dr. George Schaller, in a 2004 survey of wildlife in the Wakhan, recommended that the eastern tip of the Little Pamir should be designated a strictly protected area (about 250 km2).
		This area is at present not used by herders, and thus the habitat is in excellent condition and does not conflict with human use patterns.

		Therefore, anthropologists are in agreement that genetically these people are not related to the Saka tribes who inhabited the areas farther to the north: their ties lie to the southwest, perhaps in the Hindu Kush and northern India, and in all likelihood they are the descendants of a more ancient local population.
		In fact, although the modern population of Wakhan belongs to a different type, there is reason to believe that, at least in the last centuries BCE, a people of the same physical type and culture as the modern population of the eastern Pamirs lived there.

		East of Lake Sarikol, the supposed source of the Amu Darya, the northen edge of the Wakhan corridor was sufficiently remote that it was not demarcated until 1895.
		The Wakhjir Pass is at the confluence of three of the world’s great mountain ranges: the Karakoram to the south-east, the Hindu Kush to the south and the Pamir to the north.
		If this is the case, and the true source of the Oxus lies south of the Wakhjir Pass, huge tracts of the Wakhan Corridor should have fallen to the Russians, and Afghanistan and China would not share a border at all.
