When at the show in Florida some years ago I was discussing a koto wakisashi, beautiful bo hi, with its dealer/owner.
It turns out that somewhere in this wakisashi's history, someone had decided that he didn't like the fact that the habaki came off and he had better solder it in place, hence the blue hue.

I have not heard of the use of shoto (or Wakisashi) in Aikido.
I have heard of an Aikido club utulising the two weapons principle, but since they don't use wakisashi, they used Bokken and Tanto instead.
Saotome sensei did shoto technique this summer at bnoth the DC Summer camp and the Rocky Mountain Summer Camp.
