Poem composed by Etienne De Walcourt in praise of Jean De Castro, in De Castro's Livre de chansons nouvellement composé à trois parties, Paris, Le Roy-Ballard, 1575.
Etienne De Walcourt was born around 1540 in Walcourt near Namur.
In 1574, the year before the poem for De Castro was published, De Walcourt had honoured him with an ode in the anthology La fleur des chansons à trois parties, compiled by De Castro, in which Walcourt amiably addressed the composer as "nostre Castro".

This time I leave the train in Jeumont, one of the poorest places I have seen in urban France ; there is no bus before noon to Les Auatre Bras so in fact I begin my walk in Jeumont.
At Walcourt, I intended to find easily a hotel room, or if there were none to take a train to sleep in Charleroi.
But one hotel is full, filled by TV staff (the mass on television will be broadcast from Walcourt tomorrow), and in the other, the owner has one room, but no staff to tidy it.

Was rewarded on arrival at Walcourt - the Basilique de St Materne.
I was struck by the resemblance to Atargatis, the lovely goddess with a city on her head, in token that she (like Inanna) has the attributes of civilization in her gift.
Walcourt is quite near the French border and it wasn't long before I was in the Ardennes and heading for Avioth and another Basilique.

Left Walcourt just before 9:00 with a cloudy sky, although the sun was trying to come through at times.
Didn't find the Chambre d'Hôte I was given in Walcourt and ended up spending the night in a hotel, a little over-budget but the only thing available, so not much choice really.
Walcourt is an old town on top of a hill overseeing the valley, with an impressive Gothic church and central square.

Called by Ferdinand I to the Conference of Worms in 1557, he accompanied François Sonnius and Martin Rythovius and there met three other theologians from the Low Countries: Jean Delphinus, Barthélemy Latomus, and P. Canisius.
About 1558 he was made provost of Walcourt, in Namur.
In 1561, on the resumption of the work of the general council, he was proposed as a delegate, but failing health forced him to decline the honour.

En route southwards, we passed the new quarry line and another reason for our not being able to cover it was apparent, there was a train in there which was why the two class 77’s were waiting at Walcourt.
It was also obvious why we could not do Line 286 either, there were two small trees growing in the four-foot at the start of the line, so goodness knows what it was like further along.
