Walden Inversion   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
A Walden inversion occurs when there is an inversion of configuration at a chiral center.
An inversion in the sign of rotation may or may not accompany the Walden inversion.
An inversion in the R,S assignment may or may not accompany the Walden inversion.

The monument to the Organic Chemist Paul Walden (1863–1957), which is on the lawn facing the Biology Department of Latvia University was unveiled in October 2003.
Walden, who was born in Cesis and who initially studied at the Universities of Riga, Saint Petersburg and Leipzig, left Latvia after the Russian Revolution.
He discovered the 'Walden inversion', which apparently is "a reversal of stereo-chemical configuration that occurs in many reactions of covalent compounds." (I do not understand it either!)

During a Walden inversion, a fifth atom attaches itself to the central atom opposite one of the four single-bonded atoms, displacing the one atom.
In an inversion of the device, the dowel 302 and a connected cover member of the two "stationary" inserts do not rotate while the dowel 302 and connected cover member of each of the six "moving" inserts rotate 60.degree..
Thus, an inversion with respect to the axis between one pair of diametrically opposed pairs of inserts followed by a reverse inversion with respect to the same axis results in 120.degree.

We call this result an inversion of configuration at the carbon atom.
2 displacement is the most common example of a Walden inversion, a step (in a reaction sequence) where an asymmetric carbon atom undergoes inversion of configuration.
In the 1890s, Paul Walden, of the University of Tübingen (Germany), was one of the first to study reactions giving inversion of configuration.

Paul Walden was a Latvian chemist who, while teaching at Riga, discovered the Walden inversion, a reversal of stereochemical configuration that occurs in many reactions of covalent compounds (1896).
Walden revealed autoracemization and put the foundations to electrochemistry of nonaqueous solutions.

Walden Inversion - Retention of configuration is the preservation of integrity of the spatial arrangement of bonds to an chiral centre during a chemical reaction or transformation.
The occurrence of a Walden inversion during a chemical transformation is sometimes indicated in the chemical equation by the symbol shown below in place of a simple arrow pointing from reactants to products.
It is mainly used to illustrate the conformation of large cycloalkanes e.g.

The term Walden inversion is used to describe the stereochemical outcome of aliphatic bimolecular nucleophilic substitution reactions.
Since there is no a priori connection between the sign of optical rotation and the stereochemical configuration for different compounds, it was not possible to conclude with certainty that the change in the sign of the specific rotation reflected a change in stereochemical configuration at the reaction center.
This result is exactly what you would predict if you assume that each substitution occurs with inversion of configuration at the reaction center.
