Re: Samuel Lovett Waldo's wife Deliverance
Samuel Lovett Waldo was my great-great-great-great-grandfather, which should make you and me third cousins twice removed (it sounds like he was your great-great-grandfather).
One nice thing about establishing a royal ancestry (you're descended from Edward III through 19 generations) is that you get that royal person's genealogy (of which there is usually quite a bit) as your own, so the lines then reach very, very far back.
The royal line of Samuel Lovett Waldo comes through the early settler Thomas Dimmock, from a book establishing the royal lines of many early American colonists.

Faces of a New Nation; essay by Lisa Reitzes   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
A few of West's proteges, notably Washington Allston and Samuel F. Morse, attempted to become historical painters, with mixed results in a society unaccustomed to, or uninterested in, the literate complexities of the academic tradition.
But most of West's followers excelled in portraiture after their return to America, and for two generations they produced elegant and skillful images of the political, social, and economic elite of the new nation -- with Stuart in Boston, Sully and the Peales in Philadelphia, and Waldo in New York.
By the early nineteenth century, American artists depended on the patronage of the privileged few but also hoped for the emergence of a culture in which the American democratic experiment would extend to the fine arts, where "American civic spirit would nourish great art."
