Waldshut - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Waldshut is a district (Kreis) in the south of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
The district dates back to the Oberamt Waldshut, which was created when the area became part of the state of Baden in the beginning of the 19th century.
In 1973 the districts Säckingen and Hochschwarzwald were dissolved and were partially added to the district Waldshut, which then grew to its current size.

Balthasar Hubmaier, later named "the literary leader and standard-bearer" of the Anabaptists by Heinrich Bullinger1 and their "head and founder" by John Faber,2 was born in Friedberg around 1480.
Hubmaier's Waldshut reforms were based initially on the Zwinglian consensus from the Zurich disputations, with emphasis on the reform of the Mass and the abolition of traditional devotional practices.
Waldshut was formally under the sovereignty of Austria, and was suspected of harboring sympathy for the revolutionaries.

Hitherto his acts at Waldshut had been those of a trimmer, or, at least, of one whose course was undecided.
On his return, he submitted to the clergy and deanery of Waldshut eighteen articles of religion, in which he upheld justification by faith alone, taught that the mass is not a sacrifice, but simply a memorial of the death of Christ, and denounced images, purgatory, celibacy of the clergy, and other Roman errors.
Affairs in Waldshut grew steadily worse, and a strong Catholic party was formed, which favored surrender of the city to the Austrians.

 Anabaptism in Germany
It was about this time that he became clearly convinced that infant baptism is contrary to the Scriptures, as we learn from a letter written by him to Cecolampadius, written January 16, 1525, in which there is an elaborate argument against the scripturalness of infant baptism.
About this time he married a daughter of a Waldshut citizen, and during Lent he abolished the mass, which up to that time he had celebrated in German, had all pictures and altars removed from the churches, and the priests discarded vestments and wore henceforth ordinary clothing.
In the spring of 1525 William Reublin, who had been compelled to leave Switzerland, came to Waldshut, and through his instructions Hübmaier became convinced, not only that his baptism in infancy was a nullity, but that he ought to be baptized on personal confession of faith.
