The Waldviertel lies between the Danube and the Czech frontier in the northwest of Lower Austria.
The much eroded granite mountains of the western Waldviertel reach heights of over 1,000m/3,300ft in the Weinsberger Wald, which forms the boundary between the Waldviertel and the Mühlviertel in Upper Austria, and south-west of Wietra (Ostrong, 1,060m/3,478ft; Weinsberg, 1,039m/3,409ft; Tischberg, 1,073m/3,521ft; Nebelstein, 1,015m/3,330ft).
The eastern Waldviertel is a rolling plateau with gorge-like valleys.

The Waldviertel Region with its 240 000 inhabitants is located in the north-west part of the province of Lower Austria about 100 km from the federal capital of Vienna.
Waldviertel Management provided assistance in obtaining funds and subsidies and by advising the farmers and training the staff before the opening of the Centre.
The structure of Waldviertel Management also resulted from the desire of the provincial government of Lower Austria for there to be an institution capable of carrying out crisis management in the Waldviertel Region, even with the uncertainty of not knowing the outcome of just such an initiative.

Also Walter Klomfar and the librarian Charlotte Ziegler 1987 came to the conclusion that Walther might be born in the Waldviertel.

On Sunday May 1, 2005 there was a String Festival in the Waldviertel in Niederösterreich, in the little town of Rottenbach, featuring two concerts of AIS players, performing solos, small ensembles and large groups.
The performances were held in a fourteenth century grain storage farm that has been renovated into a concert hall.
At midday, lunch was served at a lovely Waldviertel country Inn.

We drove through the Waldviertel (Forest District) and into the Mühlviertel (Mill District), back through more of the Waldviertel, and into the Wachau area along the Danube.
By the time we got to the Wachau it was getting late, so all we did was drive through, other than a brief stop to stretch our legs.
