The horse on display in the Palestine gallery at the Australian War Memorial is a chestnut gelding typical of the Walers used by light horsemen in the campaign in the Middle East during the First World War.
This horse and rider are equipped for the period 1916-17.
A remount is simply a horse that is not one of the horses that accompanies a unit when it is initially deployed.

The Waler is an Australian working horse breed that originated from the horse stock that was bought to the Australian colonies in the 1800s.
The waler combined a variety of breeds; notably the Cape horse (from the Cape of Good Hope), English breeds (such as the Thoroughbred, Clydesdale, Percheron and Arab) and the Timor Pony.
The gait of the waler was considered ideal for a cavalry mount.

Waler horses were not prone to sore backs, whereas the English troops moved about at the trot and suffered from sore-backed horses.
Walers running wild, those descendants of remounts became the chief source of retaining and re-establishing Australian horses, not as a type, but as a breed with over two hundred years of breeding.

The Light Horse differed from cavalry in that they usually fought dismounted, using their horses as transport to the battlefield and as a means of swift disengagement when retreating or retiring.

Horses arriving in the colony needed strength and stamina - not only to survive the long sea voyage (which took between nine and twelve months) - but also to work in foreign, untamed environment which had become their home.
Weak horses were culled, and only the stronger types were used to breed the sturdy saddle horses essential for the colony's development.
The Walers, used by the AIF were amazingly sturdy creatures, for they had to carry an approximate weight of 18.5 stone or 110 kgs into battle in a variety of conditions ranging from mud to sand.

The first horses arrived in New South Wales in 1788 which was a shipment of 7 horses, 1 stallion, five mares and a colt, from Cape Colony.
By 1817 horses were being exported to the 'near east' and since New South Wales was the oldest of the Colonies, the name Waler may have been coined from back then.

What we call a waler are the horses that were running here on the station when we bought it.
Just a friendly word of caution, there's a few people in the horse world currently touting themselves as 'the only real Waler breeders', and others arguing that the Waler was a 'type' rather than a breed per se.
Anyone interested in purchasing some of the last remaining GENUINE Waler horses or just to get some photos please contact me. We are currently breaking-in 3 geldings who are from Lambina Station in far north SA where Jim Robb bred remounts for the Army.
