Records suggest that the first white man into the Walgett area was Captain Charles Sturt in February, 1829 as he explored the Castlereagh River and ventured into the area.
The Walgett Mail was the first newspaper to be published in the region and commenced publication in 1879, its publisher being a man named George Cohen.
Walgett was also the gathering place of many of the areas aboriginal tribes.

Walgett Special 1 Co-operative Ltd is grain co-operative registered under in Co-operatives Act 1992 (NSW).
During the harvest of 1987, 30,000 tonnes of high protein, high screenings grain was produced due to a hot, dry finish to the growing season.
Dissatisfied with this price, 40 local growers formed the Walgett Special One Co-operative Ltd to maximise returns to the growers, and to provide a body that would lobby the wheat industry for recognition of the Walgett grain as separate class for grading purposes.

Federal Member for Gwydir, John Anderson, has announced funding of $258 thousand for the Walgett Shire to enable native vegetation mapping to support vegetation management in the low rainfall cropping areas of north-western New South Wales.
"Under the Walgett initiative methods and standards will be applied to all present and future native vegetation data, there will be an assessment of Statewide data and public information material will be provided to the community.
Walgett Shire has been selected as the pilot project for New South Wales and the project is expected to be completed by the Year 2000.

The unique personal stories of thirty Aboriginal people from Walgett and Collarenebri have been recorded in two publications – including, for the first time the recollections of seven men.
Launched in Walgett tomorrow the publications are the latest in a series of Aboriginal oral histories published by the Department of Environment and Conservation.
