Though Wali wrote in different types of verse forms - masnavi, qasida, etc - it was Gazals that he specilized in.
Wali died in Ahmedabad in 1707, and was buried there.

Wali has often used the word Hindi for his Urdu poetry as was the vogue in his days.

The line was stretched further back by subsequent research and the honor was handed over to Quli Qutub Shah (1565-1610 CE), a King of Golkanda.
However, these poetic species have an old world aura about their subject and style, and are different from the modern Nazm, supposed to have come into vogue in the later part of the nineteenth century.

Urdu poetry had yet to find its niche.
Poets like Quli Qutb Shah, Wali Deccani, Mir Taqi Mir, Mir Dard and Mirza Soda took it upon themselves to break the shakles and establish Urdu poetry as a rightful rival to its Persian counterpart in the subcontinent of that era.
