Walid Jumblatt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Walid Jumblatt (Arabic: وليد جنبلاط‎) (born August 7, 1949), is the current leader of the Progressive Socialist Party of Lebanon and the most prominent leader of the Druze community.
Walid Jumblatt is the son of Kamal Jumblatt, the assassinated founder of the PSP, the party which Walid Jumblatt currently leads.
During the Israeli occupation and subsequent withdrawal of Lebanon in 1982 and 1983, Jumblatt's militia, backed by Soviet weaponry from Syria and possibly with the aid of Palestinian guerillas, overran sixty Maronite villages, killing thousands, as a retaliation for Maronite hostilities that occurred earlier in the war.

Jumblat himself has long maintained that Israeli-occupied Shebaa Farms are Syrian, not Lebanese territory, a distinction that obviates the need for Lebanese "resistance." Hence, in Cairo, Jumblat suggested that there was no longer any justification for Hizballah to bear arms.
Jumblat is an astute politician who does not appear to harbor a desire for personal martyrdom; in fact, he is taking precautions in Lebanon and abroad to protect himself.

The Beirut Spring: Jumblat Strikes Again
While some pundits speak of Jumblat's latest moves as necessary tactics to co-opt the loyalists and deprive them of excuses, it is not entirely unimaginable that Jumblat would just re-examine his alliances based on new givens.
From Jumblat's point of view, the opposition would be a united front as long as the Syrians are in Lebanon and as long as Hariri’s murderers remain unreachable.
Jumblat's position now is starting to look more like that of the future movement: chummy with the opposition but with a centrist and independent streak.
