I'm all for the re-evaluation of Victorian art, and don't want to suggest that this comprehensive show isn't entertaining, but unless we recognise that Alma-Tadema is inferior to other artists who took part in the neoclassical revival of the 1860s and 70s, such as Whistler, Albert Moore, Leighton and Burne-Jones, we are lost.

The refurbishment of the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool has seen a 1930s extension to the Victorian building transformed into modern gallery.
The revamp, carried out after the Walker closed to the public in June 2001, has also included the refurbishment of two 17th century galleries which house works by Rembrandt and Poussin.
Julia Treuherz, keeper of galleries, said: "The new galleries are beautiful spaces in which to show art and will enhance the Walker's reputation as the national gallery of the north.

One of the great treasures from the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool 'Christ discovered in the Temple' by the fourteenth-century Italian artist, Simone Martini (c.1284 - 1344) is the focus of this small display.
The Liverpool picture, an outstanding example of Simone's art, was painted in 1342, when he was living in Avignon and produced several small, unusual works for discriminating private patrons.

The impetus for an art gallery in Liverpool came in the early 1870s, when the Corporation of Liverpool's art collection became too large to be accommodated in the Liverpool Free Public Library and Museum, and when more space was needed for the popular Autumn Exhibitions of current paintings in the town.
The Walker Art Gallery opened in 1877, and when five years later an extension was added, again Walker insisted on paying the entire cost.
The collection is strong on Pre-Raphaelite pictures, and together with the not-far-off Lady Lever Gallery, Port Sunlight, represents one of the greatest concentration of their works.
