The town of Walkerton became suddenly famous throughout Canada and the world in May 2000 after the town's water supply became contaminated with the highly dangerous O157:H7 strain of E.
A 2005 CBC Television documentary called Betrayed was based loosely upon the Walkerton tragedy.
A similar outbreak struck North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 2001.

In Walkerton, of course, Koebel was too busy falsifying records to notice that this time there was a problem, while in North Battleford, Strelioff knew that the filter wasn't properly in place (after being removed for routine maintenance) but left the filter as it was for three weeks, until widespread incidents of diarrhoea occurred.
Stan Koebel, the man singularly most responsible for the deaths in Walkerton earlier this year (he didn't report to the proper authorities that the tests came back showing the water was poisoned with E Coli), has been on "compassionate leave" since the debacle.
Walkerton's former water manager, Stan Koebel, testified at the public inquiry on Monday that he was unqualified to hold the position.

Walkerton's water system, it turned out, was vulnerable in part because the two untrained brothers who ran it, Stan and Frank Koebel, didn't grasp the importance of monitoring and treating the water properly under what were mostly voluntary guidelines.
Walkerton touched off shock waves that resonated across Canada and prompted every other jurisdiction to look at its own approach to drinking-water safety, said Duncan Ellison, executive director of the Canadian Water and Wastewater Association in Ottawa.
