		Harold C. Urey (1893-1981), winner of the 1934 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of deuterium, was born in Walkerton.

		The town of Walkerton became suddenly famous throughout Canada and the world in May 2000 after the town's water supply became contaminated with the highly dangerous O157:H7 strain of E.
		A 2005 CBC Television documentary called Betrayed was based loosely upon the Walkerton tragedy.
		A similar outbreak struck North Battleford, Saskatchewan in 2001.
