October 2003 OPC Release - Art of the Mckimson Brothers
Although Tom and Charles were important in their own right as animators, it was Robert who ascended the ranks to become a director for Warner Bros. Hitting the ground running, McKimson’s first effort was the 1946 classic, “Daffy Doodles,” which met with critical acclaim.
But it was his second short, “Walky Talky Hawky,” for which McKimson was nominated for an Academy Award.
McKimson’s work from then until the closing of Warner Bros. Animation in the early 1960s, became known for a consistency and an attention to detail, all of which was accomplished with so-called junior animators.

 Robert McKimson
About 1943, he drew the now famous pose of Bugs Bunny leaning on a tree, with a carrot poised for chomping, which has remained the characters standard publicity image ever since.
When McKimson became a director, he helmed famous Warner Bros. classics such as “Daffy Doodles,” “Acrobatic Bunny,” and “Walky Talky Hawky,” with Henery Hawk and newly born character, Foghorn Leghorn, which was nominated for an Academy Award.
But it was character design that showed McKimson’s talent, in which many new and varying settings were used to exploit his character’s personalities.

 Did you Know...?: Henery Hawk
Henery was introduced in a 1942 cartoon called The Squawkin' Hawk, in which he headlined and starred.
In 1946's Walky Talky Hawky, Henery faced off against the strapping Foghorn Leghorn (who would've been an ideally tasty catch for our little hawk).
Though the cartoon was incredibly well received--and even garnered director Robert McKimson an Oscar nomination--it served as a star-making vehicle for Foghorn, not Henery.

First appearing in 1946 in "Walky Talky Hawky", Foghorn Leghorn was created to be a supporting character in a Henery Hawk cartoon.
But this southern gentleman was a hit, and soon launched his own career.

He introduced his most important character, the garrulous barnyard rooster Foghorn Leghorn, in his fourth cartoon as a director, the Oscar-nominated "Walky Talky Hawky" (1946).
This was the studio's first major "star" to be closely based on a pre-existing character--in this case, actor Kenny Delmar's characterization of Southern Senator Claghorn on the popular Fred Allen radio show.

 TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES
A pint-size chicken hawk named Henry (introduced four years earlier by Chuck Jones) was given a new foe in Robert McKimson's "Walky Talky Hawky" (1946) - a big blustering rooster named Foghorn Leghorn.
Voice actor Mel Blanc later admitted to further borrowings from yet another character, a hard-of-hearing sheriff that appeared on a local California radio program.
Also debuting in "Walky Talky Hawky" is the goofy Barnyard Dog who would be on the receiving end of punishment from Foggy for years to come.

I must admit that most of my affinity for this set lies squarely with the inimitable Foghorn Leghorn, who pops up on the fourth disc with excellent results.
Walky Talky Hawky ain’t exactly the ultimate Foghorn Leghorn showcase (his iconic “Where-I-say” delivery doesn’t really get a chance to kick into full gear here), but as an example of the character’s nascent appearances in the Warner Bros. canon, it’s a juicy and hilarious entity.
And I don’t care what anybody says; an itty-bitty chicken hawk dragging a dog around by its tail and calling it “chicken” is just plain funny.

Whatever the case, it wasn't only Foghorn Leghorn's voice--performed by the great Mel Blanc--that made him funny.
And he became an instant star when he stole the show from Henery Hawk in his very first film, "Walky Talky Hawky".
From that point on, there was no stopping him in his endless torture of the barnyard dog, his pointless lecturing of pint-sized Henery, or his efforts to duck the Cupid's bow of Miss Prissy.

Jones' stylized movements and distinctive backgrounds allowed Jones to focus primarily on the action and atmosphere of the short.
Chuck Jones directed the original Pepe le Pew; Friz Freleng introduced, Sylvester, and the volatile Yosemite Sam erupted onto stage in Freleng's "Hare Trigger." A year later, Robert McKimson's "Walky Talky Hawky" introduced us to the boisterous rooster Foghorn Leghorn.
McKimson also introduced the Tasmanian Devil, Hippety Hopper, and Sylvester's son.
