The largest recorded flood on the Walla Walla River occurred in December 1964 and was estimated to have a stage of 18.90 ft (423.90 ft MSL) and a peak discharge of 33,400 cubic feet per second (cfs) near Touchet (after confluence with Touchet River).
The 1931 flood was devastating to the City of Walla Walla spurring the construction of the Mill Creek Reservoir.
Walla Walla sustained only minor damages during the February 1996 flood owing to the operation of the diversion and detention system.

The Walla Walla River Mural began as a drawing on a paper napkin during lunch.  Then, in the fall of 2001, I began a series of hikes, sketchbook in hand, up the South Fork of the Walla Walla River (located in eastern Oregon) to gather visual information for the eventual mural.

In the spring she was taken up the river to Fort Chelan to tow logs for the sawmill and for the offices use she proved to be a failure, too heavy draft, could not carry fuel to do her from one landing to another, she was lined over all the rapids up the river.
All the country north of Snake river was in Whitman county and all south of the river in Walla Walla county.

Walla Walla (people), North American tribe of the Sahaptian language family and of the Plateau region culture area.
The tribe formerly occupied territory along the lower Walla Walla River and the east bank of the Columbia River, south of its junction with the Snake River.
In 1855 the Walla Walla were removed by treaty to the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon, where they have become largely integrated with the Nez Perce, Umatilla, and Cayuse tribes.

Although the lower portion of the Walla Walla River was not historically used for spawning due to the low level of water and lack of appropriately sized gravel in their spawning grounds, the rest of the basin was extremely prolific (USACE, 1997, 2-12).
The pollution is caused by runoff of agricultural byproducts and stormwater.
Hatcheries in the Columbia River basin have "annually reared between 200 and 300 million juvenile salmonids for release," and approximately 75 percent of the Columbia River stock of salmon are from hatcheries (USACE, 1996a, 2-9).

Environmental groups were a year into discussions about how to get more water in the Walla Walla and were preparing to sue the districts, the big targets in a complex basin filled with smaller water users.
The draft goal is to get 150 cfs in the river during May and June -- more than 10 times the trickle that is in there now -- to help smolts on their way to the ocean and returning spring chinook that tribes are attempting to reintroduce in the Walla Walla.

There are many changes occurring along the Walla Walla River, including the fact that an agreement between three local irrigation districts and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has resulted in a continuously flowing river last year (2001) during the summer irrigation season for the first time in more than 100 years.
The Walla Walla River is an interstate river that originates in the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon and runs north into Washington to its confluence with the Columbia River between the Snake River confluence and McNary Dam.
In April 1998, the Walla Walla River was listed by the environmental group American Rivers as eighteenth on their list of "America's Most Endangered Rivers of 1998" due to being "flow impaired" as a result of irrigated agriculture having diverted all of the river's flow.

 Irrigation cutbacks may keep Walla Walla River flowing
Despite drought-diminished supplies, Walla Walla Valley farmers are surrendering increasing amounts of irrigation water this summer to avoid being shut down by the federal government.
The agency is forcing changes in the Walla Walla River to protect bull trout, which are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.
Until that point, all of the water in the river traditionally was used by irrigators even though withdrawals reduced the river to a strand of rocks near the Washington-Oregon border.

However, by including all third parties that had expressed an interest in Walla Walla River flow restoration in the settlement process, and then incorporating their comments and viewpoints into the settlement agreement, the Districts were able to gain some level of certainty regarding their 2000 operations.
Irrigation districts in the Walla Walla Basin have adopted a strategy that is focused on cooperation and is designed to avoid protracted litigation that would undoubtedly lead to high litigation costs and uncertain results.
