Wallace participated in the military commission trail of the Lincoln assassination conspirators as well as the court-martial of Henry Wirz, commandant of the Andersonville prison camp.

Wallace grew up without benefit of a mother or a formal education, although his father was a West Point graduate and governor of Indiana in the late 1830s.
In July, Wallace commanded the outmanned and outgunned Union forces at the Monocacy River (Maryland), as Confederate General Jubal Early advanced toward Washington, D.C. Wallace delayed the Confederates for eight hours, or a day's march, long enough for Washington to be adequately protected.
Lew Wallace died on February 15, 1905, in Crawfordsville and was buried in nearby Oak Hill Cemetery.
