Greenslade was sort of a personification of the BBC, as news announcers or radio voices tend to be.
Greenslade's responsibilities with the show went much deeper then simply being a large target, although this was obviously important.
Greenslade, known to most of his working associates as "Bill," joined the staff of the network as a general announcer in the late '40s.

Michael Bentine was part of the regular cast for the first two seasons, often playing Prof.
Wallace Greenslade - announcer, he opened and closed each show (often parodying the traditional BBC announcing style), and occasionally played himself in an episode, as well as other small parts.

He worked in a variety of shows during and after his time on the Goon Show (1953 - 1960).
Wallace died in 1961, just over a year after the final series of The Goon Show had ended.

For "The Last Goon Show of All" in 1972 the original announcer Andrew Timothy (Christopher's father) was brought back.

It’s all in Spike’s mind, and at times it is difficult for the audience to tell reality from manic dreaming, but somehow it all works together.
John Honey’s straight-man-announcer Wallace Greenslade has a lovely reserved way about him, and Honey’s other characters, especially the key role of Spike’s doctor, are well performed.
